Emil M. Cioran was born in 1911 to Emilian, a Romanian Orthodox priest, and his anguished wife, Elvira in a Rasinari, a small idyllic Transylvanian town Emile remembered fondly throughout his life. Cioran's family, comprised of an older sister, Virginia, and younger brother Aurel, was one of the wealthiest and most prestigious in the small town and had a long tradition of priests.

Cioran enjoyed what he considered a happy childhood, though this happiness consisted of fond memories of town drunks and playing with skulls in the cemetery. Emile's world collapsed at the age of 10 when his family sent him to live with a German family in the larger town of Sibiu, which, despite the trauma, allowed the young boy to develop a facility with, and love for, the German language.
